SHORT BIO
Powerful and funky, The Super Saturated Sugar Strings’s take on modern Americana is full of dense, intricate instrumental arrangements and shout-to-the-rafter vocals. Their lush back-beat-americana-meets-chamber-ensemble sound has stirred a large congregation of dedicated fans in Alaska. There's an element of carnival sideshow in their sometimes cinematic sound, drenched in strings and horns and bombastic ideas. Nobody does anything small in Alaska, and this Alaskan band delivers a mesmerizing and powerful performance with an energetic charm that makes you want to take them home for dinner.
NOTABLE QUOTES
Throughout All Their Many Miles, the Super Saturated Sugar Strings traverse a wide range of musical territory. Almost a third of the album falls into a progressive pop-vocal category led by Moore’s shining, yet smoky vocals (“Precipice,” Amplified,” “Long Road”). Another third, which features Watt’s gruff, almost Tom Waitsian singing, harkens to traditional folk songs. The rest of the LP includes a range of instrumentals that could fit as well in feature-length film scores (the tension-ridden “Crocodile”), Broadway musicals (the uplifting “Float”), or high-paying television commercials (like the bouncy end to Watt’s vocal song, “Love Cocoon”).
Call it orchestral alternative folk-rock, throw in all the adjectives you want, but really, just go to one of their shows and listen. This is a musicians’ band, where violin, cello, and acoustic bass combine with piano/guitar, drums, and a one-man brass section to bring a vibrant, rich, clear acoustic sound to the stage, and to listeners’ ears.
